Two Richmond City high schools receive grants to launch new 21st Century Community Learning Centers
Centers will support over 700 students and family members

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recently awarded Armstrong and John Marshall high schools over $375,000 to implement two new 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) programs for students and families during the 2016-2017 school year. Richmond Public Schools is one of 33 school divisions, non-profits and community groups to receive the grants, which range from $50,000 to $200,000. VDOE 21st CCLC grants are renewable for up to three years.

Armstrong High School, with Armstrong Priorities as the co-applicant, received $189,875 to launch the Armstrong Center for Empowerment (ACE), a program designed to provide academic enrichment and intervention for the school’s incoming freshmen. Along with academic supports, the program will introduce students and their families to college and career opportunities, offer professional development for ninth grade teachers to ensure rigorous and relevant instruction, and provide health and wellness education as well as parent and family outreach. ACE will be supported by several community partners, including Armstrong Priorities Freshman Academy, Art180, Communities In Schools of Richmond, Delores Foundation, Farmstrong, Stage Write Cadence Theatre Company, Groundwork RVA and the Center for Environmental Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. The program will serve an estimated 300 students and 100 family members.

John Marshall High School, with Virginia Union University as the co-applicant, was awarded $189,300 to implement The Academy at the Justice Center of Community Excellence. The program will support incoming ninth grade and selected 10th grade students with daily after school tutoring, a remediation program, small group workshops and interest groups. Program collaborators include Communities In Schools of Richmond, Girls For A Change and Distinctive Gentlemen. Over 250 students and 100 parents are expected to be served by The Academy.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program is authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. For more information about 21st Century Schools, visit the VDOE website.
